Jang Ping Thia

Jang Ping Thia joined the AIIB in 2016 and is currently the Lead Economist and the Manager of the Economics Department. The department is responsible for economic analysis at AIIB, including country macroeconomics, debt sustainability analysis, review of project economics and financials, to support investment operations. The department is also responsible for AIIB’s flagship publication, the Asian Infrastructure Finance report, which highlights infrastructure development and financing issues. For 2023, the report is about “Nature as Infrastructure”, documenting the contributions of nature to global GDP, and how nature-based solutions and financing should be seen as part of overall infrastructure development.

Prior to joining the Bank, JP was with Singapore Ministry of Finance, covering expenditure on security, sports, community and telecommunication infrastructure. With a PhD from the London School of Economics, he was also previously the Economics Director at the Ministry of Trade and Industry.

He works on trade, economic geography, infrastructure development and finance related issues. His research has been published in Sustainable Development (forthcoming), Structural Change and Economic Dynamics, The World Economy, Journal of International Trade and Economic Development, Economic Change and Restructuring, Quarterly Review of Economics and Finance, Journal of Financial Services Research (forthcoming), Journal of Economics and Finance.
